UWSA dues are just 0.28% of your salary, deducted from your paycheque each month.
UWSA dues are usually tax deductible; consult with your financial advisor to be sure. We'll issue you an annual statement in February or March.

Are dues mandatory?
That depends on when you were hired.
Staff hired after October 26, 2022 have mandatory dues
Our new Memorandum of Agreement with the University respects the Rand formula, a standard feature of Canadian labor law. Established by a 1946 Supreme Court decision, it mandates that all workers covered by collective contracts pay dues, ensuring no one benefits from the contract without contributing.
Religious objections
If you have a bona fide religious objection to paying labour association dues, you can submit a sworn affidavit explaining the objection. If accepted, your dues will be redirected to a charity. See the MoA for more details.
Staff hired before October 26, 2022, can opt in to contribute
The Memorandum of Agreement mandates dues for new employees, but those hired earlier remain on an opt-in model. This is a compromise on the Rand formula, and we encourage all staff to join the UWSA and support our costs.
