Mifrah Abid

Director

Term of office: April 2025–October 2027

About Mifrah: I have a Masters in English and taught Applied Linguistics & Literature at a university college in India. I am a certified TESL Canada trainer. I worked for several years as an anti-racism advocate- working closely with victims of hate & with system leaders to counter systemic discrimination. I delivered several trainings & workshops for municipal staff, professionals & teachers across Waterloo region. I write opinion pieces in the Waterloo Record. I also taught in Conestoga College's School of Community Services/Interdisciplinary Studies. I also produced the podcast 'Across Her Table'.

Reason for running: I like to be engaged in whatever communities I am part of, whether it is the neighborhood group, the local mosque, or my childrens' school. As an employee at UW, the Staff Association also represents a community for me, and I wanted to be an engaged member here too. I hope to bring an equitable lens so that everyone has a chance to be heard and represented.

Vision for UWSA: I envision the UWSA as a trusted space where every staff member feels welcome to share their aspirations and needs — no matter who they are or how they identify. I want the UWSA to actively respond to those needs by (a) creating safe and equitable spaces, (b) supporting staff learning and professional growth, and (c) building a strong sense of community – either through events, activities, or external partnerships that open up opportunities for staff to explore and enjoy. My goal is to make every staff member feel valued, connected, and supported.
