Program:4A Honours Legal Studies
I have benefitted from the support of so many members of the UWaterloo community and wanted an opportunity to give back to that community myself.
Procrastination. I would feel like I had ample time to complete everything so I would wait, and then find myself rushing to throw everything together at the last minute. I have had to make an active effort to schedule everything more efficiently and stick to it.
One of my favourite things about the Faculty of Arts is the opportunity to try courses that you would not expect yourself to have taken. Last term I did ITALST281 which is an Italian Film course, and it was eye-opening to learn about the intricacies of filmmaking in general that I had not previously considered whilst also learning about Italian culture and history.
Reading (mostly fiction) and watching movies. I am also usually listening to music if I am not actively having a conversation.
Program:Masters of Management Science
I've always loved helping people grow and achieve their goals, and this role seems like the perfect way to do just that. It's all about connecting on a personal level, sharing experiences, and cheering each other on. And the best part? It's a two-way street – I get to learn and grow alongside the people I'm coaching.
I have encountered my share of academic and study skill challenges over time. Maintaining effective organization has occasionally proven to be a struggle, given the complexity of managing various academic responsibilities simultaneously. Additionally, combating procrastination has been an ongoing endeavor. The PSCs have helped me address these challenges through strategic planning, adopting meticulous scheduling techniques, and breaking tasks into manageable segments.
My favourite course that I have taken so far is BE 680, a Consulting course, due to its hands-on approach, practical skill development, teamwork enhancement, and the chance to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations.
Some of my hobbies include devouring fantasy fiction and curating Korean pop music. I also enjoy trekking and adventure sports; gotta love the adrenaline rush!
Program:PhD Candidate in Sustainability Management
I am deeply passionate about helping my fellow students succeed academically and personally. Having completed my master's at UW, I understand the challenges and pressures students face, especially when transitioning to higher levels of study. I believe that peer support is incredibly valuable, as it fosters a sense of relatability and trust. As a 1-1 Peer Success Coach, I want to leverage my own experiences, knowledge, and empathy to guide and mentor students, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential. This role aligns perfectly with my desire to contribute positively to our university's community and support others on their academic journey.
During my academic journey, I have faced my share of challenges, and one particular skill that I've struggled with in the past is time management. Balancing coursework, research, and personal commitments can be demanding, and at times, I found it challenging to effectively allocate my time. However, over the years, I have developed strategies and techniques to improve my time management skills, which have proven to be invaluable in maintaining a healthy work-life balance and achieving academic success. I'm excited to share these strategies and help fellow students overcome similar challenges.
My favorite course so far has been BET 600 - Applied Business Leadership Skills for Entrepreneurs. As a PhD candidate in sustainability management and a part-time MBET student under the entrepreneurial PhD fellowship, this course was particularly intriguing to me. It provided valuable insights into leadership and entrepreneurial skills, which I believe are essential in today's dynamic business environment. Plus, it perfectly complements my academic journey in sustainability management by adding a practical dimension to my skillset.
I love exploring the natural beauty of our region's trails. I also enjoy practicing mindfulness through meditation and yoga, which helps me stay grounded and focused on my busy life. Reading is another passion of mine, and I often delve into sustainability literature and life philisophies to unwind. Lastly, I have a keen interest in community engagement and volunteer my time to support local sustainability initiatives and mentor young students interested in pursuing careers in sustainability management. These hobbies and interests not only provide balance to my life but also align with my commitment to sustainability and personal growth.
Program:4B Joint Honors Heath Studies and Honors Psychology
I'm interested in working as a 1-1 Peer Success Coach because I understand how difficult it is to be a student and what it is to face the ups and downs of being one. I have a desire to help students ignite their potential to achieve their academic goals and pursue their personal ambitions, regardless of their walk of life. I do this by guiding students to undergo personal development and the application of the life lessons and academic strategies I've learned throughout the entirety of time at the university.
It is safe to say that I have struggled with majority of academic skills in the past including time management, organization, reading, note-taking, test-taking, and overall discipline in all areas of life. I struggled to succeed in university for quite a while until I realized what worked best for me and what truly aligned with my values. This led to me mastering self-discipline and finding the beauty behind struggle. Once I realized what I was truly capable of, I was able to fulfil my greatest goals and I am continuing to push my limits to become the person I always wanted to be. As Napoleon Hill says, “strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle”.
PSYCH 363: Psychology of Intimate Relationships
This is my favorite course that I’ve taken so far because it made me understand how and why our upbringing forms the way we interact with ourselves, others, and the world. This information has led me to become more empathetic with others and appreciate the power of human connection a lot more.
My hobbies and interests include reading and researching about mental health, watching TEDx talks, taking mindful walks, practicing mindfulness meditation, reading, and engaging in insightful conversation. Regarding my creative side, I enjoy fashion, makeup, singing, playing piano, designing jewelry, interior designing, and writing.
Program:4A Health Studies, Gerontology Minor
As a student myself, I understand the difficulty of discovering effective study routines that work best for you while also juggling various responsibilities. I’m interested in being a 1:1 Peer Success Coach because I’d like to be able to support other students who may be facing similar challenges to what I experienced throughout my undergrad. I’m looking forward to getting to share my own experiences and offering guidance to help students navigate academic and personal growth.
I have struggled with time management in the past. Often, I would take on more commitments and responsibilities than I could effectively manage and I would sometimes underestimate the time required for me to complete certain tasks. What helped me most was learning how to set boundaries for myself and trying various tools and strategies to keep me organized.
HLTH 201: Aging and Health.
This was one of the first aging courses that I took in my undergrad. I had such a great experience as the content taught in this course was very interesting and it truly sparked my interest to pursue a minor in Gerontology.
Some of my hobbies and interests include playing the piano and guitar, painting, reading, and learning new languages!
Program:PhD Pure Math
I have ample experience supporting students 1-1 as a math tutor, a pmath department TA, and as a PSC; these have been some of the most valuable and rewarding experiences of my professional career. I deeply enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with students to help them improve their lives, and getting to know students through their stories and struggles.
I have struggled with time management and public speaking in the past. It has been very helpful and rewarding for me to work on these skills with the support of my colleagues and mentors.
My favourite course so far has been an introduction to complex analysis in the 3rd year of my undergrad degree at Dalhousie in Nova Scotia. It was the perfect balance of surprising, interesting results and challenging problems.
I like to watch movies and TV shows, travel, play with pets – especially dogs! - , and swim.
Program:4A Honors Statistics, Physics Minor
I am interested in being a 1:1 Peer Success Coach because I want to help other students who struggle with academic/life balance challenges. I personally find it fulfilling to support others as they commit to increasing their academic and personal productivity, efficiency and self-management.
I had struggled with note taking in the past. I would always find it hard to concentrate on the class and take notes at the same time but I have found that it by trying various strategies you can work out what best works for you.
My favorite course that I have taken so far is PHYS 468, intro to Quantum Computing. It was a great experience also because the prof teaching the course was really passionate about the topics being taught and made it really fun.
Some of my hobbies include watching formula 1, swimming and playing soccer. Feel free to ask me about my favorite formula 1 driver or tea.
Program:3A Psychology
I struggled in first year with planning my time and managing my stress levels. I felt super overwhelmed with the workload, especially the transition from high school to university during the pandemic. After spending my first term trying out different strategies, I’ve found during winter term I was more comfortable with my classes and was able to join extracurriculars.
