Nature and Scope (Warriors subcommittee)
Warriors Orientation Leaders will work alongside their Warriors O-Team to implement many of Orientation’s cross campus events. This includes but is not limited to: academic programming, team building activities, and general UWaterloo information sessions. Past events include: Warrior Welcome, Trivia Night, Scavenger Hunt, Warrior Workout, Dragshow, For Your Information and other exciting events.
Nature and Scope (Faculty subcommittees)
Faculty Orientation Leaders will work alongside the O-Team to implement faculty-specific programming. This includes but is not limited to: academic programming, team building activities, and faculty-specific information sessions. Faculty Orientation Leaders may also be expected to provide support to some cross-campus events.
All Orientation Leaders will be expected to support the first-year Campus Housing move-in experience on August 30 and August 31, by fostering a welcoming environment at assigned residence locations and providing support with moving luggage from vehicles to residence rooms.
General Accountability
All Orientation Leaders are accountable to the Waterloo Orientation Team (O-Team), the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, the University of Waterloo, and their faculty to ensure the successful implementation of fall Orientation Week. The University of Waterloo welcomes approximately 7,000 first-year students each year. All Orientation Leaders must have a desire and passion for helping first-year students and must be positive role models both personally and academically. Orientation Leaders will need to be flexible and possess the ability to work closely with and lead others. This requires clear analytical thinking and excellent interpersonal skills.
Key Accountabilities
- Be in touch with student communities on a weekly basis for the duration of the program (mid-July to Orientation)
- Be available to work approximately 2-3 hours per week (including some evenings/weekends) Note: Number of hours may vary based on need and size of group
- Deliver and support engaging experiences for students, based on the direction of the Student Success Office and the needs of students
- Promote and connect students to appropriate academic and personal support services across campus
- Share personal stories and experiences as they relate to transition and adjusting to university Promote positive school spirit and a sense of community
- Build a climate of trust, respect, and inclusivity
Requirements and Qualifications
- Ability to work as a contributing member of your Orientation committee and larger Waterloo Orientation team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Willingness to take initiative to get things done and act as a role model.
- Be an undergraduate student (including co-op) until the end of the Fall 2025 term.
- Candidates should not have serious incidents or allegations of misconduct as assessed by their Associate Dean. Note that minor infractions will not automatically exclude a candidate from consideration. Please note: Each candidate is assessed on an individual basis.
Mandatory/Important Dates
Orientation Week: Friday, August 29 - Saturday, September 6 (Orientation will be taking place between these dates, final schedule TBD)
Please note that many committees run Retreats or Training in the days leading up to Orientation and would request that you attend.
Leader Retreats: TBD
Leader Retreats provide an opportunity for leaders to celebrate and get to know one another better, connect and learn leadership strategies, improve upon teamwork skills, and brainstorm and plan for Orientation events
Orientation Leader Training:
Due Monday, July 7, 2025, 11:59 p.m. EDT
Orientation Leader Training
All Orientation leaders are required to complete the mandatory online Orientation Leader Training (OLT). Once you have accepted your leader position, you will be enrolled in the course on LEARN (approximately June 2025) where you will be required to read through the modules and complete the quizzes. The deadline to complete the online OLT course is Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. - Failure to complete the course will result in your Orientation position being revoked.
First Year Move-In
