Teaching Assistant – UNIV 101: Strategies & Skills for Academic Success
The UNIV 101 course at the University of Waterloo, led by an Academic Development Specialist, seeks a Teaching Assistant (TA) to work closely with the instructor to collaboratively support students, grade assignments, and contribute faculty-specific examples and support as necessary.
Topics such as time management, note-taking, test-taking skills, resilience, memory & studying self-advocacy, and metacognition are foundational to the course. As such, the ideal candidate will demonstrate experience and a strong interest in supporting student retention by teaching and modelling academic/learning skills. This will be achieved by interacting with students through seminars, one-on-one conversations, sharing relevant resources, and leveraging educational technologies.
The candidate must be interested in developing their own teaching and learning skills and possess the ability to connect to the academic experiences of students from the Faculty of Arts in particular.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly in-person seminars and hold office hours.
- Use appropriate teaching and learning strategies while interacting with students to meet their diverse needs.
- Attend team meetings, provide feedback on assignments, and use educational tools (e.g., LEARN, Vevox).

Evaluate and provide timely feedback to students’ assessments.

Be knowledgeable of academic policies and regulations (i.e. Policy 71 regarding academic offences).
Requirements:
- Current UW graduate student, preferably a PhD candidate.
- Supervisor authorization to work more than 10 hours per week for full time students who already have on-campus work.
- Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
- Prior TA or teaching experience is a strong asset.
- Completion of the Centre for Teaching Excellence’s CUT program and/or Fundamentals of University Teaching is an asset.

Ability to understand and empathize with the needs of students who struggle academically and be sensitive to the needs and circumstances of diverse student populations.

Proven experience with LEARN as well as Microsoft Office including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
