Tutor (Tutoring in Residence Support for ECON 101)

Job description

This position requires on-campus/in-person facilitation as the University and Public Health guidelines allow.  

Primary purpose   

The tutor role facilitates the Tutoring in Residence program, a collaborative initiative with Campus Housing that supports first-year courses. Tutors are upper-year or graduate students who are familiar and confident in the course content and concepts, demonstrate strong academic skills and are interested in helping students.  In Winter 2025, the courses that will be supported are CHEM 123/125 and ECON 101. 

As a tutor, you will use your knowledge of course content and concepts to provide guidance and support to students as they study for their midterm(s) and final exams.  

The specific Tutor accountabilities may vary slightly depending on the course being supported.  

Job duties

Specific accountabilities and program delivery 

  • Tutors must be available to work the scheduled dates for the Tutoring in Residence program. This typically is the 2-3 days prior to a midterm or an exam (exact dates are pending) from 6 or 7 to 9 p.m.  
  • Tutors will arrive to Tutor sessions 20 minutes prior to each session for team meeting.  
  • Tutors will be knowledgeable of the course content and concepts. 
  • Tutors will provide guidance to students within an atmosphere of non-judgmental, collaborative, and experiential learning.   
  • Tutors will act as a strong leader and positive role model for the Student Success Office and the University of Waterloo  

Training and professional development   

  • New tutors must complete the Foundations of Tutoring training prior to the first tutoring session. 
  • All tutors must participate in all required training and scheduled meetings. 
  • All mandatory training and meetings are paid at the pay rate specified above. 

Administrative duties  

  • Assist with general program and service administration, which includes:
    • submitting payroll information,
    • providing program feedback as required, and
    • other tasks as they arise.    

Qualifications   

  • Be a full or part-time registered student and in good academic standing  
  • Successfully completed either ECON 101 (or equivalent) with a minimum grade average of 80% in the course 
  • Possess strong communication skills including active listening and public speaking  
  • Possess and demonstrate strong leadership skills to be a positive role model when helping students find their own paths to success  
  • Relevant experience working with diverse student populations  
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism in all modes of communication
