The Staff Excellence Fund (SEF) supports the well-being and professional growth of USG staff at the University of Waterloo by investing in initiatives that support a healthy and engaged workplace, and by creating opportunities for staff to contribute ideas and initiatives that strengthen the University community.
The Staff Excellence Fund aims to:
- Support staff well-being and engagement
- Support staff growth and development
- Encourage staff-led innovation and improvement
- Strengthen community and connection
The Staff Excellence Fund is part of the total compensation package for USG staff and currently receives $300,000 annually under the 2026 UWSA-UW compensation settlement. Funding is distributed by the Staff Excellence Fund Committee through three streams:
- Stream 1: Ongoing programs. These are established programs like the SEE Canada Grant, Staff Conference, Ways to Play fitness classes, and more.
- Stream 2: Staff-led initiatives. These are one-time, pilot, or time-limited initiatives proposed and run by staff, for staff.
- Stream 3: Professional development grants. This is a new stream launching as a pilot in 2027 that will support individual or small-group opportunities related to your work.
Staff-led initiatives: Submit your proposal!
Any USG staff member can submit a project for funding in Stream 2.
We’re looking for ideas that:
- contribute to a healthy, supportive workplace for staff
- help staff develop professionally, build skills, or expand their leadership capacity
- test new ideas to enhance the staff experience at Waterloo
- foster meaningful connections across staff groups
This might look like:
- well-being initiatives
- community-building activities
- workshops, seminars, and speaker series
- networking initiatives
- communities of practice
- workplace improvement projects
- shared resources, tools, or spaces that benefit staff
- accessibility, inclusion, or staff experience initiatives
Funded initiatives must:
- primarily benefit University of Waterloo staff
- align with one or more SEF objectives
- provide value beyond a single individual, team, or department
- be reasonably accessible to the intended staff audience
- take place on a University of Waterloo (not AFIW) campus, virtually, or in a hybrid format, unless otherwise approved
Who can apply?
Any individual USG staff member or group primarily composed of USG staff can apply for Stream 2 funding!
- This includes both regular and temporary/contract employees. You don’t have to be a UWSA member, and USG staff who are not represented by the UWSA are eligible to both apply and participate in funded initiatives.
- Employees with an Executive salary classification, faculty, students, unionized employees, and employees of affiliated and federated institutions of Waterloo are not eligible to apply.
- Eligibility to apply does not guarantee your proposal will be funded.
