About

Horatio M. Morgan is an Associate Professor of International Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business. He embraces an interdisciplinary research program that integrates fundamental insights and methods from economics, sociology, and psychology. In doing so, he addresses interesting puzzles in areas as diverse as international strategy, international entrepreneurship, immigrant/minority/women entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, global value chain and innovation policy, and comparative economic development.

Dr. Morgan aims to help business leaders and policymakers forge new pathways to global expansion, innovation, and sustainable prosperity in a complex and dynamic world. He has extensively studied why some young or small companies, including immigrant- and women-led companies, can expand globally and profitably. In addition, he connects the personal qualities of senior executives to corporate strategies and outcomes. In more recent work, he addresses enduring cross-country gaps in business performance (including the Canada-U.S. business performance gap) under specific global value chain (GVC) structures, innovation ecosystems, and comparative economic development patterns. His work has been published or recently accepted for publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, Journal of World Business, Small Business Economics, and Canadian Public Policy. He is also the recipient of prestigious research grants (i.e., SSHRC Insight Development Grant) and international research awards, including the 2022 European International Business Academy’s Lazaridis Institute Best Paper Award for SMEs and International Entrepreneurship and the 2020 Academy of Management’s HKUST Best Paper Award for Global Strategy.

Dr. Morgan earned his PhD in economics from Simon Fraser University. He teaches BET 340 (Essentials of Entrepreneurial Planning and Execution), BET 460 (Business Negotiations, undergraduate level) and BE 660 (Business Negotiations, graduate level). In addition, he has served as a trusted adviser and strategist to various organizations (i.e., startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, corporations and all levels of government) across multiple industries (i.e., professional services, financial services, science and technology, education, and manufacturing) and areas of specialization (i.e., international strategy, transnational immigrant entrepreneurship, innovation strategy and policy, entrepreneurship education and policy, and global value chain and export promotion initiatives).
