Beginning November 9, 2022, masks are required for any indoor activity that is part of academic instruction at the University of Waterloo. This includes, but is not limited to, lectures, seminars, teaching labs, tests, exams, and all other forms of academic instruction wherever it happens indoors. Individuals may also be asked to wear a mask in other places, like office hours or meetings.
Students and employees may request an interim mask exemption for the Fall 2022 term by completing a Mask Exemption Application Form if they are unable to wear a mask due to disability(medical), creed(religion), or other grounds protected by the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Currently, students and employees are not required to provide supporting evidence of the need for an interim mask exemption with their application. However, if circumstances change, including the mask requirement being extended for additional terms, the University reserves the right to require students and employees to provide supporting evidence for the need for a mask exemption. The University will assess such supporting evidence to determine if the student or employee qualifies for a mask exemption as an accommodation under the Code and/or whether the University can grant such an accommodation without incurring undue hardship. Based on such assessment, your interim mask exemption may be rescinded. Granting an employee or student an interim mask exemption for Fall 2022 should not be viewed as the University agreeing that the student or employee is entitled to such an exemption under the Code.
By completing this application form, you are requesting an interim mask exemption for the Fall 2022 term. Once submitted, you will receive an automated email that confirms your interim mask exemption for the Fall 2022 term, which you can save and/ or print to show as proof of your interim mask exemption, if needed (i.e., if your course instructor or supervisor is requesting such confirmation).
NOTE: Be prepared to present the automated email confirmation of your interim mask exemption for final exams.
Should the mask requirement extend to the Winter 2023 term, information will be sent to your UWaterloo email address about the Winter 2023 mask exemption process.
