John Wetmore (BMath '73), who rose to the position of president and CEO of IBM Canada Ltd., has been one of the key players behind the rich relationship between IBM and the University of Waterloo. As a senior executive at IBM, Wetmore provided leadership to the important University of Waterloo Alumni @ IBM Campaign.

Wetmore, now retired, appealed to University of Waterloo alumni in 2004, saying that fundraising "will allow the University of Waterloo to remain the important institution it is for all Canadians. As alumni, we must lead the charge in helping to realize the goals of our campaign." The campaign is expected to have a $700,000 impact at University of Waterloo, one of the benefits being the John and Karen Wetmore Scholarship in mathematics.

Wetmore held many senior positions at IBM in both Canada and the United States. In addition to his professional achievements, Wetmore has been vice-chair of the Conference Board of Canada and a member of the board of the Information Technology Association of Canada.

He has also been a member of the federal Advisory Committee for Online Learning, and the National Broadband Task Force. He served on the board of the Sunnybrook Foundation and volunteered with the Greater Toronto United Way.

"As a past colleague of John, I can say his character and integrity is without flaw," says David Dolman, a University of Waterloo alumnus and IBM employee. "He is a natural leader and a credit as an alumnus to the University of Waterloo."
