About our volunteer-led regional groups

There are nearly 250,000 University of Waterloo alumni living across the globe. We may be spread across more than 150 countries, but we are one alumni network with shared experiences and histories. That’s why UWaterloo alumni haveestablished more than a dozen chapters, each based in a different location with a sizable population of alumni.

UWaterloo has a strong history of connection and commitment to its local community, spanning back to our founding. Local connections initially powered UWaterloo’s co-operative education program and continue to employ thousands of students at any given time. Today, those connections are felt across the globe, with alumni, co-operative education employers, students and partners located in hundreds of countries. Alumni chapters and ambassadors are just a few ways that UWaterloo creates connections thathelp shape and sustain our entrepreneurial drive and create a positive impact on the world. We need to constantly connect with our community and discover how we can all move forward together, and our volunteers in our regional groups help to do this!

What do regional groups do?

Our volunteer-driven chapters and ambassadors are built with alumni at their centre. From Toronto to Dubai and Hong Kong, the goal is bringing local alumni, students and friends together for a variety of programs and events that are tailored to their regionand its community. Alumni volunteers have created many opportunities, including mentorship programs, socials, networking events and family-friendly activities in their cities.

How does this support UWaterloo's mission?

Our volunteers are instrumental in cultivating and spreading the University’s unique culture and impact through the world.

At UWaterloo, we pride ourselves on identifying and solving big, complex challenges facing our planet and creating strong commitment to our local communities. After graduation, alumni carry this philosophyinto their workplaces, industries and communities.

Chapters and ambassadors bring together local alumni, partners in meaningful ways, highlight their shared values and create opportunities for connection. For co-op students in the area, we can model how to tap into their alumni network to advance their goals and stay connected to Waterloo's community and spirit.

What do alumni have to say?

"Everybody who has graduated from the University of Waterloo has spent at least three years living that life. In a certain respect, we speak the same language… and at the end of the day, there’s a little piece of remembering back when we were at Waterloo. I love when the chapter takes advantage of great things in our community and tags the Waterloo connection onto it.Those events are really valuable to me."

- Christina Hassan (MPH '16), Calgary

"It’s harder to build a network in Toronto. I really want alumni to feel at ease connecting with each other and potential innovators."

- Anne-Marie Marais (BES ’95), Toronto

As Waterloo graduates, we are lucky to have received an education that taught us how to anticipate problems, embrace challenges, and adapt to change. If you have not already done so, I urge you to review the ‘Waterloo at 100’ strategic visionOf course, such a grand plan involves our alumni who are – or will be – global citizens and future leaders.

- Michael Leung (BA ’07, MAcc ’07), Hong Kong
