Congratulations to Waterloo Architecture alumnus Alison Brooks and Alison Brooks Architects!
Winner of architect of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, Alison Brooks Architects is a London-based studio of architects, thinkers and 3D designers from around the world, led by Alison Brooks.
Every project is the result of invested research, so that the studio's design solutions emerge as unique and relevant to the constituencies they serve.
The firm sees its work as enabling a dialogue between the past and a better future through reinforcing local identity; creating generous civic places; and dissolving boundaries that limit human experience.
The studio's current portfolio ranges from urban design and landmark developments, to private houses, higher education projects and buildings for the arts.
Judges comments: Judges said the practice is "conscious and questioning, and adopts a public interest approach" and that "this is the direction we want architecture to move towards".
"A groundbreaking practice with great ethos – particularly the way that they question both norms and the profession itself."

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.
