Bianca Weeko Martin selected for the AGO X RBC Emerging Artist-Researchers program

Monday, June 7, 2021

Congratulations to MArch candidate Bianca Weeko Martin, who has been selected for the AGO X RBC Emerging Artists Exchange for her project, The White House.

The White House is a counter-narrative to a history told through monuments. It focuses on the personal, domestic scale of the home as an alternative to the obscure public-facing architectural landscape of postcolonial Manila. The project began with a reconstruction of an ancestral house in Baliuag, Philippines as an interactive website and drawing series, piecing together archival family photographs, oral accounts and personal memories. The project’s second phase, being staged with the AGO X RBC Exchange Program, will extend the drawings, webpages and text through a study of interior domestic spaces found within the AGO collection.

The jury remarked on the strength the proposal's focused line of research into the representation of interior domestic spaces found within the AGO's collections. The jury responded with joy and curiosity to Bianca's animated drawings and their accompanying soundscapes which, in their view, created arresting digital experiences.
