Summary

Physiological computing is a vibrant field of research where human-physiology, sensor technology and computer interfaces converge together in a highly multi-disciplinary area. Essentially, physiological computing relates to the use of body signals as input control in systems that use this information for purposes varying from simple feedback of the incoming signals (e.g., biofeedback), to more sophisticated adaptive systems (e.g., biocybernetic loop) capable of creating individual responses based on the users’ performance. Novel interactive and immersive technologies (e.g., virtual reality, social robots) can take advantage of physiological computing by allowing the system to be aware of the user’s inner states to create experiences that are more engaging and tailored to the target audience. This seminar will cover a comprehensive introduction in the field by exploring the creations of one of the pioneer’s in the field, Dr. Alan Pope, a distinguished research associate technologist from NASA Langley who will be sharing his experiences of designing physiologically adaptive systems. Moreover, the seminar will showcase original research carried out by researchers at University of Waterloo covering the creation of novel tools for physiological computing for applications in bionics, human-robot interaction and virtual reality.
