Poster: The Anthes Papers Poster (PDF)
On September 28th 2011, Susan Thorne and Geoffrey Hayes gave a presentation about the Anthes Papers, a set of letters by the German-Canadian pastor Anthes, which have been preserved in the German archive of the University of Waterloo.
Susan Thorne from Queen’s University has published as a freelance translator of Jurek Becker and William Koeppen and is currently working with the short stories of German-Chinese author Lingyuan Luo and with the research group translating and interpreting the Indian correspondence of East German theatre director Fritz Bennewitz.
Dr. Thorne spoke on the deciphering and interpretation of the Anthes correspondence.
Geoffrey Hayes’ interests lie in Canadian military and modern Canadian history. He has authored books on The Lincoln and Welland Regiment at War (1986) and Waterloo County. An Illustrated History (1997); and is co-editor of Vimy Ridge: A Canadian Reassessment (2007) and Afghanistan: Transition Under Threat (2008).
Dr. Hayes spoke on the significance of their content for German-Ontarian history.
