Jeffrey Sachs to help launch SDSN on campus today

Today marks the launch of Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Canada, an organization established at the University of Waterloo to facilitate Canada’s realization of the Paris Climate Agreement and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Jeffrey Sachs.Acclaimed development economist Jeffrey Sachs will deliver a free lecture tonight discussing the SDSN and Canada’s role and duty towards solving global problems like poverty, gender equality and economic development.

The event takes place from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre. There's still time to register.

SDSN Canada joins 24 other chapters around the world, harnessing the potential of more than 700 universities, NGOs, governments and financial institutions, in a pioneering effort to form collaborative partnerships to tackle the planets toughest challenges through multi-sector cooperation.

The official launch takes place over two days, with a full day of activities scheduled at the Centre for International Governance Innovation on Tuesday, May 8.

Meet your Strategic Plan Advisory Committee representatives

The Provost’s Office is pleased to announce the following successful candidates for the Strategic Plan Advisory Committee (SPAC):

  • George Freeman, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (Regular faculty, defined by Policy 76)
  • Samantha Hossack, PhD Student in History, Faculty of Arts (Full and part-time graduate students)
  • Awn Duquom, Mechatronics Engineering Student, Faculty of Engineering (Undergraduate students)
  • Catherine Newell Kelly, Registrar, Registrar’s Office (Full-time regular staff, defined by Policy 54)

The successful candidates will join Faculty deans, University vice-presidents and the University secretary, an Alumni representative and representatives from the Faculty Association at the University of Waterloo, Graduate Student Association, Federation of Students, and the Staff Association at the University of Waterloo as representatives on the Advisory Committee. The SPAC will help inform, advise, and guide the development of Waterloo’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

Waterloo International hosts information sessions

A message from Waterloo International.

Waterloo International wants your input about international travel safety and security. 

Hosted by the Working Group on International Travel Issues (WGIT), University members are invited to one of three information sessions, part of the consultation process to develop robust guidelines and resources to mitigate risk for travelling abroad. Details of the procedures and resources presently in place for international travel can be found at the International Travel Safety and Security webpage.

The information sessions offer an opportunity for University members to learn about the information gathered by the WGIT and its taskforces, ask questions about international travel, and offer insights based on their own experiences. The information sessions will be held on the following days and times, and at the following locations:

  • Tuesday, May 22, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., East Campus 5 1111
  • Wednesday, May 30, 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., East Campus 5 1111
  • Monday, June 4, 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., East Campus 5 1111

Anyone wishing to attend an information session should complete a registration form. (Note that the format and introductory content of each information session will be identical.)  A survey will also be available for anyone unable to attend.

While such vibrant mobility is part of the University’s overall strategy for internationalization, the safety and security of University members remain of paramount importance. Please help us to ensure we have a comprehensive international travel system that strengthens everyone’s peace of mind.

Staff will vote on Board of Governors rep

The call for nominations closed at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday 3 May 2018 for one member of the full-time staff to be elected to the Board of Governors by the full-time staff members of the University, term ending 30 April 2021. Three staff members were nominated:

  • Liam Morland, Information Systems and Technology
  • Jackie Serviss, Office of Research
  • Jeremy Steffler, Co-operative and Experiential Education

Candidate statements are posted online.

The campaign period will run from Friday 4 May to Tuesday 15 May 2018 (eight business days). The voting period for regular, full-time staff will run from Wednesday 16 May to Wednesday 23 May 2018 by electronic ballot (five business days). The voting period for union, full-time staff will run from Wednesday 16 May to Wednesday 30 May 2018 by paper ballot (10 business days).

Beyond Stigma and other notes

In today’s society, there remains a lack of awareness, and sometimes bias, regarding mental health problems. Employees are invited to join Ron Hallman from Waterloo’s Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP) for a wellness session entitled "Beyond stigma: Increasing our understanding of mental health in the workplace" on Wednesday, May 30 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in EC5-1111.

This wellness session will assist participants in enhancing their understanding of the personal and environmental factors that can have an impact on mental health, the common signs and symptoms of mental health troubles and the most appropriate prevention and intervention strategies.

If you are interested in attending, please register as seating is limited.

Today marks the beginning of Feds Welcome Week. Classic Welcome Week events such as Warrior Breakfast will be happening alongside special spring events like a Terrarium Workshop and an Ice Cream Cart.
