It’s that time of year again: Human Resources has informed managers about key dates for the 2018 staff performance appraisal process.
The key dates for 2019 include:
January 2019 |
Memo to all staff highlighting the process for Annual Performance Appraisals |
January to February 2019* |
Staff and managers meet to discuss performance and review the Performance Appraisal Form |
Deadline March 15, 2019 |
Human Resources will be loading performance ratings into Workday and will require finalized and signed, hard copy Performance Appraisal Forms. The deadline for these forms is March 15 to allow for the May 1 calculation of annual salary increases. Once the appraisal has been conducted, ensure the following people have signed the form: 1. Employee 2. Manager 3. Department Head All original signed performance appraisal forms must be in a clearly marked confidential envelope and submitted to the attention of Joan Kennedy, Compensation and Benefits Analyst, Human Resources, EC1 |
Black-out period March 16, 2019 to April 30, 2019 |
Any requests for job evaluations received during the black-out period that may result in a change in salary grade will be accepted, however changes in salary will not be effective until May 1, 2019 when the black-out period has concluded. |
*While these dates are the formal University of Waterloo dates, your department may have adopted variations within this timeline. Please check with your manager to confirm your timeline. |
Managers are invited to refer to Policy 18 for information on managing staff and conducting performance appraisals. According to Policy 18, all managers must receive performance management training before they write their first performance evaluations. Register for OHD405 Performance Conversations on the Organizational and Human Development website.
Managers can also visit the compensation section of the Human Resources website for details on preparing and conducting the performance appraisal, frequently asked questions, and the current version of the Performance Appraisal Form (available in DOCX and MAC formats). There have been no changes to the form since the last appraisal period.
The appraisal process is also an opportunity to assess if job descriptions are reflective of the work being performed, and reviewing safety practices in the workplace. Job descriptions are available on the Staff Job Descriptions webpage.
Anyone with questions is invited to contact Joan Kennedy, compensation & benefits analyst at ext. 31948 or your Human Resources Partner.
