Register for the Gender Inclusion in Research, Hiring, and Training: Data and Strategies workshop

There's still time to register for the Gender Inclusion in Research, Hiring, and Training: Data & Strategies. This session was designed by the Inclusive Research Team in the Office of Research as part of the Building Inclusive Research Capacity (BIRC) Program for faculty.

Topics covered in the workshop include organizational values, diversity in teams, overcoming barriers, and promoting a broadly inclusive culture through allyship in research, hiring, and training.

Dr. Hilary Bergsieker, Waterloo Equity Fellow and Project RISE Co-Lead within the Engendering Success in STEM research consortium, will deliver this interactive workshop.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday, October 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (including a break for coffee and light refreshments) in E7 7303.

2023 Cheriton Research Symposium coming up on Friday

The Cheriton School of Computer Science invites you to attend the 2023 Cheriton Research Symposium on Friday, October 6!

Learn and engage in discussion about the latest in computer science research at this showcase of scholarly excellence made possible by David R. Cheriton’s generous investment in education.

This year’s symposium begins with a welcome at 9:30 a.m. in DC 1302 by Cheriton School of Computer Science Director Raouf Boutaba, followed by presentations by Cheriton Chairs Professors N. Asokan and Jimmy Lin. Following their talks is a presentation by Professor Emeritus David R. Cheriton. The afternoon session features poster presentations by Cheriton School of Computer Science graduate students in the DC Atrium from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The symposium wraps up with an awards ceremony in DC 1301 for the first-, second- and third-place poster winners.

Tuesday's notes

This afternoon there will be an information session about the University of Waterloo/University of Essex Double Degree Program in Human Rights and Law at 1:00 p.m. today in United College's Alumni Hall B (UTD-201).  At this session, Anna Purkey, the Director of the Human Rights Program at University of Waterloo, and Emily Robinson, International Officer for Essex University, will be presenting the program and answering your questions.

The Imaginus poster sale in the Student Life Centre continues today from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. now until Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

The Faculty of Science is hosting a New Faculty Lecture tonight featuring the Faculty's Dean, Dr. Chris Houser, who will be speaking on The State of Canada's Coastline. "Coastal erosion and flooding is a global problem that is a result of both human activity and natural processes," says the lecture's abstract. "It poses a threat to personal property, sensitive ecosystems and critical infrastructure. Dr. Houser will focus on coastal issues within the Great Lakes including bluff retreat along the north shore of Lake Erie, the erosion at PointPelee which threatens critical habitat for migratory birds, and the retreat of the shoreline at Pinery Provincial Park, Long Point and Rondeau. He will also talk about high water levels and coastal floodring as well as changes in lake ice and storm activity and how changes in those will affect coastlines in the future. Dr. Houser will also discuss beach safety issues in the Great Lakes with a focus on rip currents, drownings and the need to improve beach safety."

The event takes place at 7:00 p.m. in QNC 0101. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
