Accelerated Master of Engineering (MEng) program

The Accelerated MEng program offers undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to fast-track their Master of Engineering (MEng) degree. Through this program, students can complete their MEng in as little as two terms after earning their Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree.

The MEng degree requires the completion of eight graduate-level courses. The Accelerated MEng program allows students to complete up to two of these courses during their undergraduate studies. Participants can take one graduate-level course in their 4A term and another in their 4B term or during a work term.

Degree requirements for the MEng degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering can be found in the Graduate Studies Calendar.

Eligibility

The Accelerated MEng program is available to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo who maintain a minimum 80% cumulative average at the end of their 3B term.

How to apply for the Accelerated MEng program:

Students interested in applying for the Accelerated MEng program in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering should obtain the application form, complete the steps outlined below, and register before the end of their 3B term:

Confirm academic eligibility

Admission to the program requires students to demonstrate consistently strong academic performance. Students must maintain a minimum 80% cumulative average by the end of the 3B term. All applications are subject to review by the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies to assess their suitability.

Academic plan for the Accelerated MEng Program

The academic plan is a list of graduate courses (600-level or higher) that students plan to take as part of the Accelerated MEng program. These courses are taken as "extra" (with NRNA or TRIA designation on the transcript) and do not count toward the course requirements of the BASc. Students may take a maximum of two graduate courses (0.5 weight each) in the Accelerated MEng program. Once students have completed their BASc and are enrolled in the MEng program, these two courses can be transferred and counted toward the requirements of the MEng program.

NOTE: Students must achieve a grade of at least 65% in any graduate-level courses taken as part of their undergraduate studies.

Application process for the MEng or MEng (Co-op) program:

Students in the Accelerated MEng program are required to submit an online graduate studies application package for the term in which they intend to begin the full MEng or MEng (co-op) program. This step is typically completed during the 4A term.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Maintain a minimum 80% cumulative average throughout your undergraduate studies.
  • Achieve a grade of at least 65% in any graduate-level courses taken as part of your undergraduate program.

Priority Admission: Students in the Accelerated MEng program who maintain a cumulative average of 80% or higher in their last 20 undergraduate courses and achieve a minimum of 78% in their graduate courses will receive priority admission to the MEng or MEng (co-op) program upon application.
