Abstract:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is proud to announce that Dr. Weiyi (Ian) Shang, has been named a 2025 Distinguished Member by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s leading computing society.
This year, ACM recognized 61 Distinguished Members from leading universities, corporations, and research institutions across 16 countries, honouring individuals for significant technical contributions and impactful service to the computing community. The ACM Distinguished Member designation highlights up to 10 percent of ACM’s global membership, celebrating leaders whose work is shaping the future of technology.
Dr. Kami Vaniea, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo and a leading researcher in privacy and human-computer interaction, has just returned from the prestigious Dagstuhl Seminar on “Grand Challenges for Research on Privacy Documents.” Held in Germany, the seminar brought together some of the world’s foremost experts to tackle urgent privacy challenges and their growing impact on technology. As a member of Waterloo’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute, Dr. Vaniea’s participation highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to addressing critical privacy issues in the digital age.
The Government of Canada announced funding for several University of Waterloo faculty members through the New Frontiers Research Fund (NFRF).
“The New Frontiers in Research Fund supports high-risk, high-reward Canadian projects with the potential to spark transformational innovations,” said Charmaine Dean, vice-president, Research and International. “This year’s awardees from the University of Waterloo represent a variety of truly impactful research areas, including equitable approaches to climate change adaptation and improving eye health outcomes in children. Congratulations to the 2024 winners.”
The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and its Members have elected this year’s new Fellows and named the incoming class of the RSC College.
One hundred and one new Fellows have been elected by their peers for their outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. Recognition by the RSC for career achievement is the highest honour an individual can achieve in the Arts, Social Sciences and Sciences. One of those newly elected Fellows is electrical and computer engineering professor, Kerstin Dautenhahn.
