Mohamed Kamel

Mohamed Kamel was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a co-founding director of the Centre for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (CPAMI). He passed away on December 4, 2015.

Robert MacPhie

Distinguished Professor Emeritus

Dr. MacPhie earned his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1963 and joined the University of Waterloo shortly thereafter as an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department (now the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). He was promoted to associate professor in 1966 and to professor in 1971. After a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he retired in 1996 and was later named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Dr. MacPhie passed away on December 3, 2025, at the age of 92.

Jon Mark

Jon Mark

Dr. Jon W. Mark, a prominent researcher and influential mentor who played a leading role in building the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), died on December 7, 2023.

Mark joined Waterloo in 1970 and officially retired in 2001, although he remained an active presence in the department as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus. Mark trained, supported and influenced thousands of students and colleagues. From 1984 to 1990 he took on a leadership role as Department Chair. During his tenure the Computer Engineering program was established. This transition was reflected in the department name, which changed to Electrical and Computer Engineering under Mark’s guidance.

John Reeve was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 1967 until his retirement in 1996. Professor Reeve passed away on June 19, 2007.

He received many awards during his long and distinguished career: he became an IEEE Fellow in 1982, was bestowed the IEEE CAS Golden Jubilee Medal in 1999, and became Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2000. He passed away on February 11, 2015.
