Abstract:

1D and 2D van der Waals semiconductors have emerged in recent years as attractive candidates for ultra-thin and low-power nanoelectronic devices. Importantly, the controllable introduction of defects into these materials can serve to enhance their electronic and optical properties down to the monolayer limit. In this seminar, I will discuss the use of the helium ion microscope as a means of creating mobile defects in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) for novel resistive switching applications. I will also highlight our recent efforts into interfacing individual semiconducting carbon nanotubes with 2D monolayers in novel structures known as mixed-dimensional heterojunctions. These low-dimensional heterostructures enable the realisation of highly gate-tunable p—n diodes and transistor devices in the atomic limit based on modulation doping across the van der Waals interface.

Biography:

Jakub graduated with a Gold Medal award in Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 2015. He received his PhD in Physics from Trinity College in 2019 for work on defect engineering of 2D materials in the group of Prof. Hongzhou Zhang. During his PhD, he was also a visiting researcher at Peking University, China and Nanchang University, China. He is currently a postdoctoral research scientist in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, where he works on mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures and CMOS post-processing for ultrasound applications in the group of Prof. Ken Shepard.

All are welcome!
