Title

Towards Efficient and Privacy‐Preserving Computing in Big Data Era

Abstract

Big data, as it can mine new knowledge for economic growth and technical innovation, has recently received considerable attention, and many research efforts have been directed to big data processing due to its high volume, velocity and variety (referred to as "3V") challenges. However, in addition to "3V" challenges, the flourishing of big data also hinges on fully understanding and managing those newly rising security and privacy challenges. If data are not authentic, new mined knowledge will be unconvinced; while if privacy is not well addressed, people may be reluctant to share their data for big data analytics. As security has been investigated as new dimension "veracity" in big data, in this talk, we mainly aim to exploit new challenges of big data in term of privacy, and devote towards efficient and privacy‐preserving computing in big data era. Specifically, we first formalize the general architecture of big data analytics, identify the corresponding privacy requirements, and introduce an efficient and privacy‐preserving Cosine Similarity computing protocol as an example in response to the data mining's efficiency and privacy requirements in big data era.

Speaker's biography

Rongxing Lu has been an assistant professor at the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, since May 2013. Before that, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Waterloo from May 2012 to April 2013. Rongxing Lu was awarded the most prestigious "Governor General's Gold Medal", when he received his PhD degree from the department of electrical and computer engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2012; and won the 8th IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Asia Pacific (AP) Outstanding Young Researcher Award, in 2013. He is presently a member of IEEE Communications Society. His research interests include big data security and privacy, network coding security, and applied cryptography.

Invited by professor Weihua Zhuang. This is an IEEE Vehicular Technology Chapter presentation.
