Electrical and computer engineering MASc student recognized with Young Leaders Award

Miswar Syed, a MASc student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received the 2024 Young Leaders Award from the non-profit organization Walking Softer.

The Young Leaders Award is a prestigious recognition that includes a cash prize of up to $75,000 and a year-long program designed to support visionary young leaders who are making significant contributions to the conservation and regeneration of the planet.

Walking Softer's mission is to inform, inspire, and support Changemakers to take bold and immediate action in the conservation and regeneration of our planet. Each year, the organization identifies and empowers individuals whose innovative efforts are driving real-world solutions to environmental challenges.

Syed specializes in renewable energy and power systems. His areas of expertise include renewable energy systems, energy storage technologies, green hydrogen-ammonia, and AI applications in smart grids. His contributions have earned him multiple international awards. He is a researcher, published author, inventor, TEDx speaker, and panelist, having participated in numerous conferences worldwide. Furthermore, Syed has experience working with both Fortune 500 and startup companies in the clean energy sector.

Miswar's latest venture, Swish, which is part of the University of Waterloo’s startup incubator, Velocity, is revolutionizing solar panel maintenance. Syed’s vision for Swish aligns with his broader goal of enhancing solar panel efficiency and promoting the adoption of clean energy solutions. As he continues to drive innovation in the renewable energy sector, his contributions are expected to have a lasting impact on sustainability and clean energy systems worldwide.
