Professor Ladan Tahvildari

Electrical and computer engineering professor, Dr. Ladan Tahvildari has been named an IBM Champion for 2025. This prestigious recognition is awarded in acknowledgment of her exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the IBM technology community over the past year.

The IBM Champion designation, a one-year term that may be renewed annually based on continued engagement and contributions, celebrates those who demonstrate innovation, thought leadership, and deep commitment to advancing technology. Dr. Tahvildari’s work in the field of software engineering, particularly in the areas of self-adaptive software systems, cloud application management, and scalable data analysis, has made a lasting impact on both academia and industry.

Reflecting on the honor, Dr. Tahvildari expressed deep gratitude for the longstanding partnership between IBM and her research lab. "The collaboration with IBM has been instrumental in shaping the direction of my work and has provided valuable resources to push the boundaries of innovation. I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition," said Dr. Tahvildari.

As the leader of the Software Technologies Applied Research (STAR) Group at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Tahvildari has advanced critical research that bridges cutting-edge theoretical concepts with real-world application, particularly in adaptive security and big data management. Her team’s work is at the forefront of developing decision-making approaches for self-adaptive software, helping to build more secure and efficient systems for modern technologies.

In addition to her research, Dr. Tahvildari is highly active within professional organizations. She is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), where she has held various leadership positions. Notably, she served as an elected Member-at-Large for the IEEE Technical Council of Software Engineering (TCSE) from 2016-2018, chaired the TCSE Awards in 2018, and chaired the IEEE TCSE from 2020-2024. Dr. Tahvildari also played a pivotal role in the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group in Kitchener-Waterloo for over a decade. In 2024, she was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and most recently, she was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society, which started last month.
