Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor, Kankar Bhattacharya, has been named an IEEE Fellow. He is being recognized for his contributions to electricity markets and reactive power ancillary services.
The Waterloo Chapter of the Sandford Fleming Foundation has awarded Hossam Amer, a PhD student in ECE, the Sandford Fleming Foundation Teaching Award for 2016!
ECE Professor Vijay Ganesh has won the prestigious ACM Test-of-Time Award at the ACM Computer and Communications Security (CCS) 2016 conference for his 2006 paper entitled "EXE: Automatically Generating Inputs of Death".
The ACM Test-of-Time Award is given to researchers whose papers have been deemed as having the most impact over a 10 year period in a sub-field of computer science.

Professor Nachiket Kapre, a recent hire in the ECE department, and his team have won the Best Paper award at the IEEE/ACM CASES 2016 conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Their paper "CaffePresso: An Optimized Library for Deep Learning on Embedded Accelerator-based Platforms" shows how to deploy machine learning routines on constrained embedded platforms.

ECE's PhD student, Jianbing Ni, Postdoctoral Fellow, Kuan Zhang and their supervisor, Professor Sherman Shen, win the SecureComm 2016 Best Paper Award for their work "Cloud-Based Privacy-Preserving Parking Navigation through Vehicular Communications", joint with Professor Xiaodong Lin (UOIT, Canada) and Professor Yong Yu (UESTC, China). The paper was presented on October 10 at SecureComm 2016 – the 12th EAI International Conference on Security and Privacy in Communication Networks.

In six short years, Lin Tan has already proven herself an ingenious researcher poised to rank among the elite in the field of software engineering. Her research focuses on improving software dependability, addressing the software bug problem at every stage of a bug’s life-cycle by creating techniques to avoid, predict, prevent and fix bugs.
Researchers at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) recorded an interaction between light and matter 10 times larger than previously seen. The strength of the interaction between photons and a qubit was so large that it opens the door to a realm of physics and applications unattainable until now.

The IEEE Computer Society is the world’s largest professional organization devoted to computer science and the Technical Council of Software Engineering (TCSE) is the voice of software engineering within the IEEE and the Computer Society.

ECE's Mohamed El Badawe, PhD candidate supervised by Professor Omar Ramahi, has won a 2016 Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) Libyan Student Excellence Award. When he was awarded his scholarship through the Libyan-North American Scholarship Program, Mohamed decided focus his research on enabling communities to better utilize their resources and develop a renewable energy source to replace Libya’s dependence on fossil fuels. ECE master's student Yunzhe Li has been awarded the 2016 Teledyne DALSA, Inc. Componentware/CAD Award. Li is supervised by Professors Karim Karim and Peter Levine. The award was presented in Montreal yesterday at the 2016 CMC Microsystems Texpo (Innovation 360).
