PhD Seminar Milestone
Key points:
- Must be completed by the end of the ninth term (or tenth if coming from an incomplete MASc).
- Both Comprehensive Milestones must be successfully completed.
- The seminar must be scheduled at least one week in advance.
- Your Supervisor(s) and all PhD Advisory Committee members (the same committee as for your Comprehensive Proposal Exam) must be present.
Instructions:
PhD candidates are required to present a seminar on their thesis topic before the end of their 9th term of active registration as part of their degree requirements. The purpose of the seminar is to help students develop the skills to effectively communicate their research findings in a clear and organized manner. Please note, the seminar is not an oral examination of the thesis.
Important: The student’s supervisor(s) and the Examination Committee (the same members as the Comprehensive Proposal Exam) must attend the seminar for credit to be granted. Upon completion, the PhD Seminar Milestone will be recorded on the student’s academic record.
Below are the instructions for completing the seminar milestone degree requirement:
Note: At least one week's notice is required to prepare for seminar announcements.
- Confirm a date for your seminar milestone with your supervisor(s) and Examination Committee.
- Once a date is set, email the following information to the PhD Program Coordinator/Advisor:
- Title of your seminar
- Abstract (preferably in Microsoft Word format)
- Proposed date and time of your seminar
- Audio-visual requirements (e.g., data projector or laptop)
After the milestone is completed and approved, the Seminar Milestone form will be sent to Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs, where it will be recorded on your academic record.
