Susan is a medical geographer with particular interests in global environment and health including the built environment (structure of planned settlements), the socially constructed environment (the social construction of health, illness and wellbeing) and the physical environment (water, sanitation, hygiene, climate change). She is an Adjunct Professor with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), a partner in much of the global water and sanitation research that she undertakes. She is also Editor in Chief of Social Science and Medicine and Founder and Co-Editor in Chief of the new journal Wellbeing, Space and Society.
