Scholar of German film to receive honorary doctorate

Professor Eric Rentschler

The University of Waterloo is very happy to award Professor Eric Rentschler of Harvard University an honorary Doctor of Letters at its Fall 2013 Convocation. 

Eric Rentschler, Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures and Chair of the Standing Committee on Film and Visual Studies at Harvard University, is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading film scholars.  Professor Rentschler’s articles and books have formulated questions and delineated paths of inquiry that have shaped, and will continue to shape, both the study of German-language cinema and film in general.  As Co-Director of the German Film Institute, Professor Rentschler has been instrumental in mentoring a new generation of scholars whose contributions reflect the influence of Professor Rentschler’s erudition and lively intellectual curiosity. 

Professor Rentschler will receive his doctorate at the morning ceremony on Saturday, 26 October 2013.  He will also give the Convocation Address.

During his visit to the University of Waterloo Professor Rentschler will be giving the annual Jacob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm Lecture of the Waterloo Centre for German Studies.  All are welcome to attend. Event details are online.
