Congratulations to Hiu Laam (Yolanda) Cheung and Christopher Fulton who have been awarded the 2014 J.W. Dyck Honours Scholarship!

The late J.W. Dyck, the founder of the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies.
The J.W. Dyck Honours Scholarship was established by the late J.W. Dyck, the founder of the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies. Valued at $1,000, it is awarded to the student(s) with the highest overall average entering the second or third year of a German and/or Russian/Slavic program.

Yolanda CHEUNG is a Psychology/German Arts & Business Honours Co-op student in her third year of studies at the University of Waterloo. Yolanda says that Germanic and Slavic Studies provides “a warm environment for students to pursue their distinct academic paths. They are supportive and helpful in assisting students not only academically, but also in getting to know each individual student. The great caring atmosphere in the Germanic & Slavic department allows students to gain cultural and linguistic knowledge through interactive learning experiences.”

Christopher FULTON is a third year German major. Christopher found his love for German by chance: he was in need of a language course in his first semester and randomly chose German. About his German classes Christopher says that “entering each semester and getting to know each new professor is a joy, as each and every one here is wonderful in their own way. They all have such a great passion for their field, and all are more than willing to spend their time helping with whatever questions you have. I loved, and continue to love, how much learning German has helped me learn about my own native language, and about myself."

Herzlichen Glückwunsch von uns allen!
