Christina Bauermeister

Joint MA in Intercultural German Studies
Christina Bauermeister

Where and what did you study before you came to Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo?

I did my BA in German and English Studies at the University of Stuttgart before starting the IcGS program.

What are your interests in German Studies?

One of the reasons for me wanting to join this particular program was that it included both literary studies and linguistics, because I still can't decide which field I like more. I am especially interested in sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and 19th century prose literature. I very much enjoy that I get to go more into applied linguistics in this program.

Why did you choose the University of Waterloo?

I chose the IcGS program at the University of Mannheim and the University of Waterloo because it seemed to perfectly integrate my different interests in a way that I could not find anywhere else. It allows me to deepen my studies in German literature and linguistics while combining it with cultural studies and even practical intercultural experience which are all things I am passionate about. I also always wanted to go to Canada.

Do you already know what you want to write your thesis on?

Unfortunately, no, but I hope to find a topic in the field of sociolinguistics/multilingualism.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a riding instructor (without ever having taken lessons myself), a hairdresser, artist, and author.

What is a fun fact about you?

I used to film everything and edit videos. I also always carried a sketch book around to draw random people.
