Where and what did you study before you came to Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo?
Before I came to the University of Waterloo, I studied German and Media and Communication Studies at the University of Mannheim.
What are your interests in German Studies?
I started studying German because I was very interested in literature. However, that changed over the course of my studies. Now I'm mainly interested in sociolinguistics, especially when it comes to multilingualism, language and migration, and linguistic identity.
Why did you choose the University of Waterloo?
Since the IcGS is a joint-degree program and a cooperation between the Universities of Mannheim and Waterloo, I did not choose the University of Waterloo directly. However, I am very grateful that the program offers me the opportunity to get to know the University of Waterloo.
Do you already know what you want to write your thesis on?
Not quite yet. In my bachelor's thesis, I looked at multilingualism in children and worked with language portraits. I would like to go in a similar direction for my Master's thesis.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a child, I always wanted to be a vet. But then I did an internship with a vet and realized that I wasn't made for the profession.
What is a fun fact about you?
I pass out whenever I see blood (that’s part of the reason why I wasn’t meant to become a vet).
