Awarded by The Gunhard A.E. Oravas Educational Fund, The Dr. Gunhard A.E. Oravas Memorial Scholarship is granted to doctoral students at McMaster University and University of Waterloo involved in research in the area of Computational Mechanics of Deformable Solids.

Dr. Gunhard A.E. Oravas was a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering. His research interests included Engineering Mechanics and Structural Engineering. He was an outstanding scholar and dedicated teacher who greatly contributed to the quality of engineering education at McMaster University. This award is established from a charitable donation by the beneficiary of his estate.

Value description: 

Up to three scholarships will be awarded annually up to a max of $14,000 each

Eligibility & selection criteria: 
  • Applicants must be doctoral graduate students performing research in the area of Computational Mechanics of Deformable Solids
  • Applicants will be assessed based on the quality of the proposed research (60%) and academic background of applicant (40%)

Application packages containing the following items must be submitted by April 15 via email to Dr. S. Pietruszczak (pietrusz@mcmaster.ca)

  • Research proposal (max. 3 pages)
    • Should provide a brief overview of the current state of knowledge in the proposed research area, address the scope of research and methodology, and highlight the novelty of contribution 
  • Curriculum Vitae (1-2 pages)
    • Should demonstrate the applicant’s background in the proposed research area and include the list (or copies) of publications (if any)
  • Transcripts (including M.Sc./Ph.D.)
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty supervisor (to be sent directly to Dr. S. Pietruszczak
