The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is an annual university-wide competition for research-based Master's and Doctoral students at the University of Waterloo. Competitors have one static slide and three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience. Participants in department or Faculty-based heats may qualify to receive a monetary award. Selection will be made by a panel of judges in the department or Faculty as appropriate.
The value of the award varies.
The winners must be University of Waterloo graduate students registered in a research-based program, and must have participated in either their department-based or Faculty-based heats of the 3MT University of Waterloo competition.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
