Invitation to Research Data Management Institutional Strategy Town Hall, November 21

November 10, 2022

We invite you to help shape the future of Research Data Management (RDM) here at the University of Waterloo. Your participation allows your voice to be heard and incorporated in the development of the institution’s RDM strategy, led by Associate Vice-President Ian Milligan and Associate University Librarian Alison Hitchens. Our development of strategy is a requirement of the Tri-Agencies, with a deadline of March 1, 2023.

RDM, as stated by the Tri-Agencies, encompasses the “processes applied through the lifecycle of a research project to guide the collection, documentation, storage, sharing and preservation of research data,” and is part of a growing national and international trend towards thinking of research data as a strategic asset to support better science.

In January 2022, we surveyed researchers across campus on the institutional landscape and how the institution could best help meet your diverse research data needs. Responding to the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, which notes that “research data collected through the use of public funds should be responsibly and securely managed and be, where ethical, legal and commercial obligations allow, available for reuse by others,” the RDM Working Group has now developed a draft Institutional Strategy.

We want to set our researchers up for success. Stewarding, describing, preserving, and sharing data all help us foster research excellence: older data can be accessed and understood, knowledge can be shared, and in so doing, we can all do better research.

This is your chance to be heard. On November 21 at 10:00 a.m., RDM Working Group co-chairs Alison Hitchens (associate university librarian, collections, technology and scholarly communication) and Ian Milligan (associate vice-president, research oversight and analysis) will be presenting the university’s draft RDM institutional strategy and hosting a broad conversation about the future of RDM at the University of Waterloo. All community members will have an opportunity to provide feedback and share their thoughts and ideas about the future of RDM on campus.

The Institutional Research Data Management (RDM) Strategy town hall will take place on Monday, November 21 at 10 a.m. as a hybrid event in EC5 1111 (Enterprise Theatre) and via Microsoft Teams. Please register if you are able to attend either virtually or in person.

The event will conclude with a complimentary boxed lunch for those attending in person. Should you have any questions in the interim, please contact nichola.harrilall@uwaterloo.ca.
