This presentation will consider the commemoration of Indigenous history by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada from its establishment in 1919 until its centenary in 2019. This will touch upon the role of the federal government in asserting state-sanctioned interpretations of Canadian history, considering both residential schools and treaties, and will also consider how Indigenous ways of knowing have been integrated into commemorative processes through the recognition of cultural landscapes based on oral histories.
