Nandita Basu, Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth and Environmental Sciences, will now serve on the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission, representing Canada.

This series will be an opportunity for the academic and non-academic community to engage with Lake Futures researchers, as they share their latest research findings and discuss implications for water policies, programs, and plans in Ontario.
Lake Futures PI Nandita Basu is leading a group of guest editors on an upcoming Special Issue of Environmental Research Letters, titled ‘Focus on Legacy Effects of Land use and Management on Water Quality and Ecosystem Function’.
Lake Futures PI Nandita Basu and Co-I Philippe Van Cappellen were part of a delegation of 24 water scientists to participate in Water Day on the Hill. This event brought together top water scientists from 14 institutions across Canada to discuss key water challenges and solutions with federal officials on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Nandita Basu was invited to speak as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series hosted by the University of Saskatchewan Global Institute for Water Security and Global Water Futures.
Zobia Jawed was invited to give a Keynote Lecture to high school students in the Shad program at McMaster University. Her talk was titled, ‘Sustainability: A Complex World of Interconnected Challenges’.
In her lecture, she discussed the complex and interconnected challenges surrounding sustainability, and the need for collaboration to tackle these challenges.
Lake Futures researchers Jess Ives and Serghei Bocaniov presented their work at the 62nd annual International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) Conference. This conference was held in Brockport NY, USA and hosted by The College at Brockport, State University of New York. This year, more than 650 scientists and researches from academia, government agencies and non-governmental organizations gathered together to improve our current understanding of complex environmental problems affecting the world’s largest lakes, such as cultural eutrophication, invasive species, new emerging contaminants, and climate change.
Meghan Mcleod, an undergraduate research assistant, won the Best Undergrad Poster award at the University of Waterloo World Wetlands Day celebration! Her poster focused on phosphorus legacies in human-impacted watersheds.

Multiple Lake Futures researchers presented their work at the University of Waterloo World Wetlands Day 2019 celebration on February 4th. Philippe Van Cappellen opened the event with welcoming remarks, including a brief history of World Wetlands Day with the Ecohydrology Research Group.
In a recent article in The Record, Nandita Basu commented on the potential impact of proposed Bill 66, saying it threatens the environment by allowing municipalities to bypass policies and acts protecting water and land.
