The Centre for Mental Health Research was pleased to host Dr. Carole Sinclair for a workshop on “Revisions to the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, Fourth Edition (CPA, 2017)". Dr. Sinclair, chair for the last several years of the Canadian Psychological Association Ethics Committee, walked through the history of the code and how it has developed to meet the needs of our profession in Canada. Her presentation, to over 40 graduate students, faculty, and community psychologists, allowed those present to understand the important role our code of ethics has in our understanding of our work with clients.
Dr. Jonathan Oakman, a professor in the Department of Psychology and a faculty supervisor in the CMHR described that “in a thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Sinclair briefly reviewed the history of the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists and alerted us to the major recent revisions to the code such as an increased emphasis on culture in the psychological functioning of the individual.” Similarly, Jenna Dawson, a senior doctoral student in the program was very positive about the presentation. “Dr. Sinclair provided great insight into how policies are developed and the procedure in which feedback is incorporated into revisions of the code,” said Jenna. “Dr. Sinclair facilitated an interesting discussion addressing audience questions and comments about application of the code of ethics.“
