Working with the University of Waterloo Recreation Committee, clinical psychology graduate students gave a series of three talks in July of this year for the community within our university. A series of talks on topics such as “Mental Health 101: Facts, Myths, and Resources”, “Understanding and Overcoming Depression and Anxiety”, and “Mental Health in Childhood and Parenting” attracted a range of people from across campus, with over 50 people in attendance over the series. Combining lectures, videos, and interactive discussions with those in attendance, the presentations were all well received.
Typical
of
those
in
attendance,
one
wrote
"Thank
you
for
providing
this
information
-
it
was
very
helpful
for
me
and
my
family"
and
another
wrote
"Thank
you
for
the
opportunity
-
greatly
appreciated
and
timely."
Dr.
Ian
Nicholson,
Director
of
the
Centre
for
Mental
Health
Research,
described
the
importance
of
such
presentations.
“With
so
much
misinformation
about
mental
health
in
the
world”,
said
Dr.
Nicholson,
“the
more
important
it
is
for
people
to
have
good
information
to
guide
them”.
He
continued
“We
are
very
proud
that
our
students
recognize
this
need
and
how
they
can
help
our
community”.
