CoSMH update - March 2019

Friday, March 8, 2019

Recommendations 17 and 20 have been completed, with ongoing work to be continued by the appropriate campus bodies. The Committee on Student Mental Health (CoSMH) has begun to address recommendation 22, which proposed mental health literacy training for students, staff, and faculty. CoSMH will work closely with a mental health training steering committee directed by Campus Wellness, as well as with Chris Read, (CoSMH member and Associate Provost, Students), to determine the scope of training for students.

A working group has been struck to address academic-related recommendations from the President's Advisory Committee on Student Mental Health's (PAC-SMH) report, including recommendations 5 (on exams and evaluations), 7 (on universal instructional design), and 16 (supporting faculty's professional development). The working group has met to discuss their initial strategy and identify which campus partners to engage.

CoSMH chair John Hirdes also met with representatives from the Centre for Teaching Excellence, Course Evaluation Project team, and the Equity Office. These campus partners have made substantial progress on initiatives addressing recommendations relating to a cultural competency committee, faculty professional development, and sexual violence-related training.
