Scope wins Concept $5K grant

Congratulations to fourth-year Nanotechnology Engineering students Holden Beggs, Alisha Bhanji, Zhenle Cao, Ishan Mishra and Fernando Pena. Their Capstone Design team, Scope, won $5,000 in the Concept $5K Finals that were held in Waterloo’s Student Life Centre on November 20, 2019.

The Concept $5K Grant supports University of Waterloo students who aspire to build an early-stage startup.

SannTek Labs, a Kitchener-based startup that developed out of a 2018 Nanotechnology Engineering Capstone Design project, has just completed a successful round of seed financing that will inject $2.6 million into the company’s efforts to develop its cannabis-detecting breathalyzer.

Congratulations to fourth-year Nanotechnology Engineering students Tiana Colantonio, Hillman Leung, Adrianus Sukuramsyah and Jonathan Wu for winning two micro-seed funding awards for their IuvoDerm wound-care product through the Engineer of the Future Fund. The team is aiming to help the many diabetic patients who suffer from nerve damage to heal faster from foot wounds, which would minimize their risk of life-changing complications.

Check out the profile of Veronica Tsou, an NE alumna whose nanotechnology background supports her career as a litigation lawyer specializing in intellectual property. She uses her broad, multifaceted educational foundation to learn and understand innovative technologies and to protect the intellectual property rights of her clients.

The Nanotechnology Engineering program held its first Design Days event on March 12 and 19, 2019.

Held in collaboration with the Engineering IDEAs Clinic, NE Design Days challenged teams of first-year students to work together, applying information learned throughout their first-year courses, new lecture material and a set of instructions to design, build and test their own small-scale scanning tunneling microscopes.

With the spirit of someone who has forgotten that luck comes to those who work hard and prepare themselves, Nan Huang (BASc ‘15) credits good fortune for helping her succeed in her education and career. Read about Nan’s experiences in the Nanotechnology Engineering program, her career as Product Marketing Manager for AMD and the job search strategies that made her so ‘lucky.’
