Access and equity lie at the heart of open education. Thus, when creating open educational resources, we must ensure that they meet the standards required by accessibility legislation. But accessibility means more than following legislated requirements or using a checklist. The way we understand accessibility not only determines our approach to accessibility, it also greatly impacts the learner’s experience. In this session, we will present key digital accessibility practices for open education developers. Using examples and interactive demonstrations that illustrate the learner’s perspective, we will also describe how these practices address common access and equity barriers for learners with and without disabilities. The session will include time for participants’ questions.
