Since the inception of the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) department, few students have taken as many courses as Kelly Brown (BA 2012, MPACS 2014). She is an alumnus of the MPACS program, majored in PACS as an undergraduate student, and attained the Conflict Management and Mediation Certificate. She has since gone on to work in mediation as well as teaching both at the University of Waterloo and beyond.

“According to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, ‘thousands of students suffered physical and sexual abuse at residential schools. All suffered from loneliness and a longing to be home with their families.’ Mennonites were directly complicit in and responsible for the running of a number of these schools.” Sophia Kauffman shared these words with a predominantly American audience at Peace Talks in September.

As a second-year Peace and Conflict Studies and Political Science student at Conrad Grebel University College and the University of Waterloo, she has been learning more about Canadian Indigenous people and cultures, and wrestling with her own ingrained assumptions. “I titled this speech ‘Sitting with Our Shame’ because I believe that this is exactly what we as a church need to do. The first step is to find the shame,” she said in her speech. “Once we find that place, we then have to do the even harder thing. We have to sit there, sit with the shame and guilt of what we’ve done. Listen to the stories of those we have hurt. Realize that our church has so, so far to go in our work towards reconciliation. And then, even harder, we have to act.”

At each spring Convocation, the University of Waterloo honours the top graduating scholar with the highest cumulative average in each honours program of study. Chiara McLean has combined strong scholarship and dedication to Peace and Conflict Studies throughout her degree and is the winner of the PACS Departmental Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. 

What happens when a university course invites students to produce creative works that engage difference constructively? On the University of Waterloo campus, in fall 2025, fourteen undergraduate students chose to tackle division intentionally, through a new interdisciplinary course, PACS 302/THPERF 490: Relational Aesthetics Towards Dialogue.

On Wednesday, March 25th  the C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest took place at Conrad Grebel University College. The event was organized by the Peace and Conflict Studies Department and the Grebel Chaplaincy office. Of the submissions, four contestants each took the podium to present their speeches relating to the application of the Christian peace position to contemporary concerns.  

While Jaden completed his undergraduate degree in Geography and Aviation with a minor in PACS, he also became a pilot and photographer. He was drawn to Peace and Conflict Studies while exploring potential options for a minor during his bachelor’s degree. 

Different perspectives on peacework gave me an opportunity to look at forms of community building that are not traditional, specifically art as a form of peacebuilding.” Jaden expressed. As a photographer, he understood the power of art as self-expression but had not considered its value for building communities. 

Originally studying political science at Carlton University, Dylan-Paige transferred to the PACS program in her second year. She wanted a program that allowed her to pursue her interest in human rights and World War II history more specifically and found that PACS would be a good fit.  

Imagine the dreams that become possible when financial barriers are removed for students: a term abroad, an immersive language program, a globally focused internship, or research grounded in another culture. Students might find themselves volunteering in a refugee settlement, researching an issue they care about, immersing themselves in global music, taking a field course in environmental justice, working with a governmental think tank, or collaborating with an NGO overseas. Experiences like these broaden a person’s perspective, change career paths, and contribute to the kind of leadership that Canada will need in the future. 

Thubelihle Mkwalula is in her second year of the MPACS program. She is originally from Eswatini and completed her undergraduate degree in global affairs in the United States. Following her undergrad, she applied directly to the MPACS program because she wanted to diversify her field of study.
