U.W.P.S. Crime Report– Weeks of April 29 to May 12, 2014

Graffiti:

Over the past several months UWPS officers have taken numerous reports of graffiti being found on various campus buildings. There were 5 more incidents reported since April 29th:

o   May 7th- on wall of ground shed at PAS. The word “Leyez” written in black marker. This is the third incident of this word being found since April 14th

o   May 8th – on exterior wall on north side of DC. The word “Baty” in black marker. This is the 7th incident of this word being found on campus property since October 2013.

o   May 11th - on Modern Language building sign and a nearby picnic table an offensive statement and a drawing were sprayed in black paint. Police believe that two males, who were seen riding bikes in the area at approximately 3:08 a.m., are responsible.

o   May 11th – on a garbage can outside the main entrance to Needles Hall.  A “$” sign sprayed painted in yellow. This symbol has also been seen on a number of election signs on University Ave.

o   May 12th – on exterior wall of Optometry Building (Columbia St. side) the word “OLIGARCHY” stenciled in yellow paint.

Thefts:

Bikes (3):

o   ML courtyard rack – between December 2013 and May 7

  •   Ladies, youth size, bright green

o   PAS north side rack - between 4:30 p.m. May 9th and 10:30 a.m. May 10th

  •   Ladies Hybrid Norco, black and blue

o   CEIT rack – between 1:00 p.m. May 10th and 1:30 p.m. May 11th

  •  Men’s Rocky Mountain 21 speed, black and green.  **front wheel left behind

Cell phone (1):

o   At PAC during exams on April 22nd

  •  LG Nexus 4, black

Cash from Wallet:

  • A wallet was lost in MC at 3:00 p.m. on May 9th. It was subsequently turned into the Turnkey Desk at the SLC at 6:00 p.m. the same date but with an amount of cash missing.

 Suspicious Persons:

UWPS are investigating two separate reports of people acting suspicious while on campus. It is not known if the incidents involve the same people but it appears on both occasions the suspects were canvassing to steal bicycles.

  • On May 10th at approximately 3:00 a.m. a male was seen in the area of the bike rack located outside QNC. He is described as:

male, white, wearing a black hooded coat, black shirt with a white logo on the front, blue jeans, black shoes with white trim

  • On May 2nd at approximately 6:20 a.m. two males were seen near the bike racks in the PAC parking lot by the SLC. They are described as follows: 

#1, male, white, black coat, white hooded shirt, jeans, red or orange shoes

#2, male, white, short black hair, black coat, white shirt, white running shoes

Speed Enforcement in Campus Parking Lots:

A complaint was received regarding vehicles driving at speeds that are endangering pedestrians in Parking Lot C. Signs are posted in U of W parking lots indicating there is a speed limit of 20 km/h. UWPS have been and will continue to monitor and enforce vehicle movement in parking lots. UW Citations can and will be issued to offenders. People are reminded to travel safely and be particularly aware of pedestrian traffic on campus.
