Research conducted at the University of Waterloo has a societal and global impact. Applying ethical considerations to the design, implementation, and dissemination establishes and maintains public trust in the research community more broadly.
Waterloo’s Research Ethics Boards and Animal Care Committee facilitate research and the other processes that support it. There are increasing requirements from funding agencies and publishers to address ethical implications in grant applications, data management plans, and knowledge mobilization activities. The staff in the Office of Research Ethics can help you think about and navigate these ethical issues.
Staff are available to address your questions regarding ethics clearance for research involving animals or human participants by:
- Consulting and providing support during all stages of the application and review process.
- Developing and distributing educational materials, guidelines, procedural information and sample documents.
- Facilitating a single ethics review model for multi-jurisdictional research; for animal-based research involving more than one institution, please email oreaupp@uwaterloo.ca.
- Arranging a guest lecturer for a course or to give a presentation on a topic related to research ethics.
- Discussing ethical principles and guidelines and how these apply to your proposed research or pointing you to other resources if needed.
