High School Students Embark on an Entrepreneurial Journey with Science and Business

By Samantha Kremer

The University of Waterloo (UW) has launched an exciting initiative involving 105 Grade 10 students from Thomas A. Blakelock High School (TAB). Supported by I-STEM, this entrepreneurial program aims to ignite creativity and problem-solving in young minds by tackling global challenges through four hands-on projects. The program is designed to inspire students by blending science and business, giving them a glimpse into the Science and Business (SCBUS) community and learning style

Kickoff Event at University of Waterloo

On September 20th, 2024, students arrived at UW eager to explore the Faculty of Science. The day featured insightful presentations on entrepreneurship, campus tours, and brainstorming sessions that introduced the core concepts behind their upcoming projects. It set the foundation for collaboration and innovation, as students began to shape their ideas which will develop over the next several months.

Applying New Skills

In March, students will return to UW to present their projects. They will showcase their innovative solutions, detailed business plans, and grasp of entrepreneurial concepts to a panel of judges. This experience is designed to enhance their public speaking, presentation, and critical thinking skills, preparing them to tackle real-world challenges—just as UW’s Science and Business (SCBUS) students do.

Endless Opportunities

This partnership between TAB and UW is more than an educational program—it’s an investment in the future of young leaders. By fostering innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, we’re helping students apply these skills early and explore their science and business opportunities.

Stay tuned for more updates as we follow these young innovators on their journey. Best of luck to all the students as they take on this exciting challenge!
