U.W.P.S. Crime Report– Week of April 14 to 21, 2014

Fraud:

The University of Waterloo Police Service is investigating two incidents of fraud that are believed to be the work of the same suspect.

On March 19th, outside the SLC, a male student was approached by an older female asking for money to help pay her rent. The male did provide some cash and once he did the female asked for additional money for other expenses.

On April 8th, outside DC, a male student was approached by an older female who asked for money to help pay her rent. Once this male provided some cash the female then asked for more money to feed her children.

In both incidents the female provided a gold color necklace as collateral until she could repay the money. Neither student has received their money back.

In both instances the female is described as:

  • 50 years of age, 5’5”, stocky build, dark complexion, wearing a cream coloured hijab, puffy light coloured winter coat, dark floor length dress, carrying a dark coloured shoulder bag and white plastic grocery bags.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have been approached under similar circumstances by this female, or believes they have seen this female on campus, to contact U.W.P.S.

False Fire Alarm:

April 15th – REV North, bottom of Stairwell B. At approximately 12:20 a.m. police and Waterloo Fire Department responded to a fire alarm. The building was evacuated but it was found there was no fire. The cause was determined to be a pull station alarm being falsely activated.

Message to the public regarding false fire alarms:

This type of incident is taken very seriously by U.W.P.S.  It results in a danger to people inside the building who have to evacuate. When determined to be a false alarm it is recognized as a major inconvenience for these residents. There is also a danger created for the fire departments and other emergency services personnel who respond in the belief there is a fire. These incidents are rigorously investigated by police and where those responsible are identified they will be charged criminally.

Police encourage anyone that has information regarding a fire alarm being falsely activated to report to their Don or U.W.P.S. directly or report via the U.W.P.S. Anonymous Reporting system found on the UW Police website. https://uwaterloo.ca/police/anonymous-reporting-form
