  • careers in computing (How to Break into ….)

  • panels and mentoring circles

  • social events and speed networking

Sessions will be led by engineers and mentors from high-tech companies, WiCS, and students. The conference is going to be held online, but there will be plenty of opportunities for networking with other attendees, mentoring, and social events (movie + Q&A with the screenwriter!). Attendees will be sent a swag bag!

If you’re interested, send an email to wics@uwaterloo.ca with an explanation of the use (e.g., attend conference, hack-a-thon) and what you will get out of attending.

Are you interested in research in computer science?  Are you considering graduate studies? Have you thought about spending a co-op term working with CS faculty full-time on a research project? The Undergraduate Research Fellowships (URFs) are for you!

Have you made a New Year’s resolution to give back?  Technovation is a program that introduces girls (aged 8-18) to computing via entrepreneurship. Participants work in teams to identify a problem in their community, learn to create a mobile app or an AI app to address that problem, and then pitch their work as a business. WiCS is the Waterloo chapter ambassador for Technovation. The Technovation program spans the entire Winter term: Jan 12 - April 26.

Technovation is seeking mentors who are willing to support teams on their project. The Technovation Girls Waterloo chapter is supporting girls between the ages of 13 and 18. Mentors are encouraged to pair up in supporting a team, to share the workload. Also, the Waterloo chapter is working with other chapters in Ontario to support participants through joint weekly workshops (which include live presentations on the week’s curriculum, time for teams to work on their projects, and additional mentors and coaches to assist the teams at all stages).
