Course: AE 125 - Structural Design Studio
Spring term (1B)

Students are to design a structurally ambitious park pavilion that provides shelter from sun and rain. Situated within the Waterloo Park master plan, the structure must reflect and represent the Waterloo community. The proposed designs examine and respond to site-specific conditions, with the goal of providing space for public gathering and community events. The pavilion must reflect a clear purpose in its proposed location.

1B student example: "Park Pavilion"

The pavilion aims to provide park goers a new destination and encourage a communal park experience by bringing people together. The structure contrasts ideas of movement and rest, acting as a ramp to transport people up a hill. The outer spiral connects a picnic area, while the sheltered interior transforms into an amphitheatre. Located in the centre of Waterloo Park, it integrates itself into the elevated landscape. Composed of concrete, the new landmark contrasts its dark green natural surroundings.
