Last Thursday and Friday, our 1A AE students came together for AE Design Days, an exciting introduction to the design-build-test process that is at the heart of Architectural Engineering.
Working in teams of five, students were challenged to design and fabricate a roof system using a limited set of materials. Their designs needed to combine a supporting structure, a water-shedding enclosure, and effective connections while balancing performance, creativity, and constructibility.
The excitement continued during testing, where one team member sat beneath each roof as simulated rainfall was applied for up to five minutes. Following the rain test, the roofs were subjected to a simulated snow load and evaluated for deflection, putting each team's design and construction skills to the ultimate test.
As always, our students impressed us with their innovation, teamwork, and determination. The creativity and problem-solving demonstrated throughout the event showcased the incredible potential of this new cohort of Architectural Engineering students.
Congratulations not only to the teams that placed in the top three (First Place: Group 18, Second Place: Group 21 & Third Place: Group 16!), but to every student who participated. You should all be incredibly proud of what you accomplished.
A huge thank you to our industry partners, faculty, technical staff, administrative staff, and student volunteers who helped make this event possible. Your support continues to provide our students with valuable hands-on learning experiences from the very beginning of their academic journey.
We are excited to see all that this talented group of future engineers will achieve, and we are proud to be a part of their journey.
